• The terms‘ Dietitian’ and ‘Nutritionist’ are often used interchangeably, which is the most common source of confusion. This is because not every Nutritionist can be considered a Dietitian, and yet a Dietitian can still be considered a type of Nutritionist.

A Dietician has completed their Masters of Dietetics and can become full Dietitians Australia (DA) members and join the Accredited Practising Dietitian (APD) Program.

However, in Australia, the term “Nutritionist” is not regulated and can be used by anyone, including those with very limited or no formal qualifications in nutrition, which can put your health at risk. Therefore it is important to ascertain credentials.

Once you’ve found a potential nutritionist, it is worth asking them the following questions to ensure they are credible and a good fit for you.

    1) What is your specific qualification and level of training?

    2) Are you currently registered with a professional association?

  • A clinical nutritionist is formally recognised as a health professional through the Australian Therapeutic Goods Act and holds private health insurance rebates with insurance funds.
